Comms
Comms is the hub of the lab's telephone network and TV station. The room is lined with racks of equipment. Telephone switches, modems, VCRs, video monitors. Many fans humming, many lights blinking to irregular rhythms. Some of the computers in the Computer Lab are connected to the telephone network or Ethernet network.
The Pi Mini server provides many of the services for both the Ethernet Network and the Telephone Network:
Ethernet NetworkSome of the vintage computers have Ethernet cards, which can still communicate with somewhat modern equipment. The Mini Server was built mainly to service them.
Telephone Network and Vintage Phone CollectionThere are four independent analog phone lines within the lab, powered by old VoIP equipment. Additionally, several virtual lines are hosted on the Mini Server.
TV StationTVs in the lab are connected to the KDTV cable network: six channels of exclusive programming, running 24/7!
